LET THEM

Moving forward from this existence is inevitable for all of us, yet we rarely acknowledge it until we are forced to face it. No matter how “well” we live or how healthy our lifestyle is, we are all mortal. As caregivers, we try to hold on as long as possible. It is normal that we aspire to prolong our loss by eliminating “unhealthy” behavior in an attempt to extend our time with them. It is important to realize that the time of mortality is beyond our control and cannot be altered. The importance should be concentrated on our loved one’s enjoyment and comfort with the time they have left with us. Even travel can be permitted while on hospice.

There are certain restrictions when one is on hospice care, but generally the patient is allowed anything. After all, what can it hurt? Obviously, there are restrictions necessary for safety concerns, such as smoking near oxygen and the possible interactions of alcohol with medication. You should always discuss possible restrictions with the hospice team.

It is important to bring joy and comfort in their last days. Don’t let the inevitable rob your loved one’s joy that they can experience here and now. Don’t let the inevitable rob you of the sharing in that experience with your loved one.

Let them…….

If they want the candy bar – let them
If they want the beer – let them
If they want to feel the snow – let them
If they want to feel the rain – let them
If they want the cigar – let them (not near oxygen)
If they want to put their feet in the creek – let them
If they want to have a party – let them
If they want the cake – let them
If they want to dance – let them
If they want to sing – let them
If they want to scream – let them
If they want the extra cheese – let them
If they want to cry – let them
If they want to laugh – let them
If they want their pet to sleep with them – let them

Now is not the time to put your limitations/restrictions on their mortality.
What are your thoughts on Just Let Them? Do you agree or disagree with it?
Best Wishes
